In Transition: Paintings and Prints
Michi Itami
November 7 –December 2, 2006
Michi Itami, In Transition: Paintings and Prints is an exhibition of woodcuts and paintings produced by the artist in Maui, Hawaii. Itami draws from nature as a source for her images; her immersion in woodcut is a return to a medium that Itami favored early in her career. Her paintings are from the matrix of the woodcut, which she transforms by further painting on the matrix itself. “[Itami’s] complex printing techniques prevail as vehicles for the expression of shifting contemplative references to evocations of landscape based on calligraphic lines,” wrote George Preston, artist and professor emeritus at City College, in a 2003 catalogue on the artist’s work.
