White Picket Fences
Carolyn Martin
October 7 – November 1, 2003
In her latest exhibition Carolyn Martin has turned from the large format, abstract drawings she is known for and entered the realm of the politically engaged. In a series of installations her new work examines the idea of the fence. Martin focuses upon that specifically American invention, the white picket fence, symbolic of frontier claim-staking and the happy home. But the pointed spikes and repeated bars of the picket fence can have more sinister implications. It is a double-edged symbol. In her tableaux, Martin combines white picket fences with iconic figures. In her collages, the white picket fence is combined with her gestural line drawings.
