In 1993, A.I.R. Gallery established the Fellowship Program for Emerging and Underrepresented Women and Non-Binary Artists. The first award in its inaugural year went to a single recipient, Tenesh Webber. The gallery now awards six Fellowships annually and has served more than 110 artists to date.
A.I.R. is an intergenerational community. Each Fellow is paired with a New York Artist mentor, giving the Fellows the opportunity to learn from other artists and to connect with the gallery’s invaluable professional resources. During the Fellowship, each Fellow presents both a solo exhibition and a community project. The community projects were originally considered a way for individual Fellows to share their specific skills with the A.I.R. community. Now, these projects serve A.I.R.’s larger public as well as its internal community.
The A.I.R. Fellowship Program for Emerging and Underrepresented Women and Non-Binary Artists is unique. Funded through public and private grants and donations, there is no cost for applicants. Fellows receive professional development workshops, a solo exhibition, a stipend, and very sophisticated one-on-one mentoring. The A.I.R. Fellowship program remains committed to providing support for women and non-binary artists in New York City and to encouraging the growth of sustainable artistic practices.
