A.I.R. ARTIST PROGRAMS
As a feminist artist-run organization with a self-directed governing body, A.I.R. is an alternative cultural institution that is supported by a network of active artist participants. Its existence was fundamental in the careers of diverse artists such as Nancy Spero, Ana Mendieta, Mary Beth Edelson, Judith Bernstein, Howardena Pindell, as well as recent artists like Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Shadi Harouni, Juliana Cerqueira Leite, and more. Throughout its history, A.I.R. has developed a number of inclusive and broad-based artist programs that are listed below.
New York Artists Program
In 1972 a group of women artists founded A.I.R. (Artists in Residence) Gallery—the first cooperative gallery for women artists in NYC and today the longest-running cooperative gallery for women artists in the United States. New York Artist members benefit from a supportive arts organization that encourages experimentation, provides resources and exhibition space, and allows artists to shape the gallery’s programming.
National Artists Program
One of A.I.R.'s initiatives is to create a national membership of women and non-binary artists. These individuals are mid-career professional artists or emerging artists showing exceptional talent. This group of artists forms a network of support and opportunity for each other and for and with the New York based member artists. A.I.R.’s National Artists Program is designed for 22 women and non-binary artists living throughout the United States.
Alumnae Artists Program
A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to announce a program for gallery “alumnae” interested in continuing their connection with A.I.R., or reconnecting, by participating in gallery programming and having New York-based representation for their careers.
Adjunct Artists Program
After maintaining 7 years of membership at A.I.R., artists will automatically be eligible for the Adjunct Program. Click on the link below to see the list of our current adjunct artists.
Fellowship Program
The A.I.R. Fellowship Program was established in 1993 by former artist member Stephanie Bernheim to support underrepresented and emerging women and non-binary artists in New York City. Each year, six artists are awarded a year-long fellowship to develop and exhibit a project at A.I.R. In the last 30 years, the A.I.R. Fellowship Program has given more than 100 artists the opportunity to have their first solo exhibition in New York City with the support of the A.I.R. community. This program encourages artistic experimentation and rigor by providing a space where feminist historical precedence and inter-generational dialogue are at the forefront.
