SUE HETTMANSPERGER

Artist Statement
The artwork I create continues an ongoing interest in physics, biological systems, and the problematic relationship of humans to their environment. Painting and Collage processes materially embody an investigation of the morphology of growth, form and organic structures. Images arise through spatial interface, tension reduction, and iterative process, metaphors for consciousness and creativity. When fragments of imagery are combined, the interstices posit a synergistic space, a disjunctive present, calling for new approaches to issues on a national and global level. In the aftermath of severe weather, we find ruptures and configurations that are elegiac, an entanglement of nature and culture in need of healing. The environmental dilemma of the Anthropocene is paramount, and this collision of nature and culture is calling for a solution through empathy and awareness of our impact.
