JULIA KIM SMITH

Artist Statement
In spite of being a member of the so-called “Model Minority,” as an Asian-American woman I continue to wonder if we have arrived yet and how will we know when we have arrived: When will we stop being treated as the other? Through much of my work, I take on issues of racism, sexism, misrepresentation, and underrepresentation–by any means necessary. My projects take the form of new media, performance, video, film, photography, printmaking, and craft and have been featured in Angry Asian Man, Animal, Art F City, ARTINFO, Baltimore Magazine, GQ, Hypebeast, Hyperallergic, Juxtapoz, Kidrobot KRonikle, kottke.org, Oasis Magazine (Saudi Arabia), Racebending.com, ShortList (UK), The Atlantic, The Baltimore Sun, and The Washington Post.
