A.I.R. Galleryʼs Downtown Manhattan Homecoming

A Once-in-a-Generation Capital Campaign to Secure the Future of a Historic Feminist Arts Institution

A.I.R. Gallery is at a transformational moment in its 54-year history.

After nearly two decades in Brooklyn, we are returning to our Manhattan roots and establishing a new, long-term home at the Federal Archive Building in the West Village. Our new 2,400 square foot facility will double the space devoted to our feminist programming and secure the future of one of New York City’s oldest alternative art spaces.

A.I.R. is now undertaking a once-in-a-generation capital campaign to renovate our new home ahead of an early 2027 reopening.

A Defining Moment in A.I.R.'s History

Photograph of Howardena Pindell during the renovation of A.I.R.’s first space at 97 Wooster Street in 1972.

A.I.R. was founded in SoHo in 1972, when twenty women artists came together to build an institution on their own terms. At a time when women were systematically excluded from galleries and museums, they created a space for artists to exhibit ambitious work, support one another, and take greater control of their careers.

Over the next 54 years, A.I.R. became a vital platform for feminist art and ideas. We have provided essential support and visibility to generations of artists, served as a model for artist-led and women-centered cultural spaces across the country, and presented programs that engage urgent questions of gender, identity, and equity.

A.I.R. has also endured. Through relocations, economic uncertainty, and recurring backlash against the communities and values we champion, A.I.R. has continued to evolve while remaining fiercely committed to our mission.

Today, A.I.R. is preparing for one of the most consequential transitions in our history.

Our return to Downtown Manhattan is an opportunity to build on 54 years of feminist community—and secure A.I.R.'s future for decades to come.

What A.I.R.'s New Home Makes Possible

Three 450-Square-Foot Galleries

More space and longer exhibition periods for ambitious solo shows and curated group presentations—expanding the support, visibility, and opportunities A.I.R. provides to women and non-binary artists.

Expanded Public Programming

More room for artist talks, performances, workshops, readings, and conversations—the gatherings that sustain A.I.R.’s feminist community.

A Feminist Art Library

A dedicated, publicly accessible home for A.I.R.’s collection of books and archival materials on women and non-binary artists and feminist art history.

A Stronger Foundation for Our Work

A rare 10-year, rent-controlled lease—the most stable occupancy agreement in A.I.R.’s 54-year history, and a foundation for our future growth.

Help Secure A.I.R.'s Future

A.I.R.’s new West Village space is secured. Now, we must transform it into a home that fully supports our artists, programs, and community.

Our $650,000 capital campaign will fund the renovation of our new facility, including essential mechanical and infrastructure upgrades that will allow A.I.R. to open this next chapter with strength, stability, and expanded capacity.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our community, we have already raised $410,000—nearly two-thirds of our goal.

Now, we need your help to raise the remaining $240,000.

Every contribution brings us closer to completing the new space, opening our doors in the West Village, and expanding the essential support and visibility A.I.R. provides to underrepresented women and non-binary artists.

Be part of this defining moment in A.I.R.'s history.
