“I am with you always

always

always we are with you

with, you

with you always

Always”

What do you learn as you sleep? Who visits you? What goes on behind your lids as you slumber, as you rest?

A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to present where they go & what they leave, a solo exhibition by 2020-2021 A.I.R. Fellow Destiny Belgrave. Composed of new textile works, the exhibition is a visual meditation on sleep, dreams, and stars.

Rest is the portal through which the journey begins. Shades of blue in billowing satin—a quintessential Black fabric of rest and care—adorn visions of the starlit sky. Dark ancestral beings, ensconced in celestial bodies, are seen in communion with their descendants on Earth. Visitors bear witness to their words of encouragement and tender embraces.

where they go & what they leave is a sacral space, one that tells a story, reminiscences on ancestry, and pays homage. It aims to be a place of wonder, a calming and warm retreat. May everyone who enters leave with something worthwhile.

Destiny Belgrave was born and raised in Brooklyn NY and nurtured, with a Caribbean and African American upbringing. She graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2018 with a BFA in General Fine Arts, and a concentration in Painting. Belgrave's work has been shown in New York City, Baltimore and even South Korea. She is a mixed media whirlwind, almost always using papercuts as her starting point.
