Joan Snitzer, The Red Studio (Detail), 2013, mixed media

September 5 – 29, 2013

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 7th, 2013, 6-8pm
DUMBO 1st Thursday: Thursday, September 5th, 2013, 6-9pm

Snitzer’s The Red Studio, is a wall installation composed of painted canvases and common objects found in an artist’s studio. The project pays homage to Henri Matisse’s work of the same title created just over a century ago.  Snitzer’s images are represented in three dimensions and references to the studio are installed as organized objects within a thin pencil grid drawn directly onto the walls of the room. The artist’s studio as installation contrasts Matisse’s use of space flattened into a painting.  Snitzer’s project re-contextualizes objects that normally exist within the periphery of our everyday lives, reframing our ability to understand recognizable objects in the context of art and its relationship to contemporary visual display.
