A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to announce Center is not a particular point on the earth’s surface*, an exhibition by 2019-2020 A.I.R. Fellow Sareh Imani. Imani’s titular multi-channel video projection navigates the making and unmaking of interior space through self-surveillance and the passage of time. This is Imani’s first solo exhibition in New York City.

In the Spring, having found herself confined to her Brooklyn apartment and unable to make work, Imani began obsessively filming her dwelling, herself, and her partner from the vantage of a single stationary camera. Fixed on its tripod, the camera became witness to first the mundane and then the chaotic as Imani and her partner decided to vacate their apartment and move out of the city. The resulting footage is a kaleidoscopic document of change and home.

On March 23rd, I decided to set up a tripod and a camera in the living room. Around a month later, we started talking about the idea of leaving the city. On May 4th, after tons of research and tons of daydreaming, we found our destination. Since then, there have been 25 days of wrapping, boxing, packing, and saying goodbye.

Sareh Imani is an Iranian-born, multidisciplinary artist based in New York. Imani received an MFA in Painting from the University of Tehran and an MFA from the Parsons School of Design in New York. Imani has been exhibiting her work in group shows in the US (New York, Austin), Europe (Venice, Gothenburg), and the Middle East (Tehran, Dubai). She is the recipient of the one-year A.I.R. Gallery fellowship (2019-2020) and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture scholarship (2018). In addition, she participated in the MASS MoCA residency (2018), AIM program at the Bronx Museum (2018), BRIC Workspace Residency (2019), BRIC Media fellowship (2020), and NARS Foundation residency (2020).
