Referencing the famous Hellenistic sculpture, Nike of Samothrace (190 B.C.), the artist has abstracted and reconfigured the winged goddess of victory into contemporary guise for our current “age of doubt” (Thomas McEvilley). In contrast to the grandiose and commemorative nature of the Greek figure, these new works are non-objective and intimate in scale. Handmade and low-tech, from materials such as paper, wood, and ceramic tiles, the five sculptures in the exhibition are exquisitely ornate, By applying intense color to highly articulated surfaces the artist intends to push several of the pieces to the edge of artifice.
