Relief Paintings
Joan Fucillo
May 15 – June 2, 1990
A.I.R. Gallery presents an exhibition of relief paintings by Joan Fucillo as part of A.I.R.’s Emerging Women Artists Program. Her paintings merge drawing, relief surface, and closely valued color to exploit the tensions between figure and ground, structure and material. Fucillo likens her work to an archaeological exploration and has said. “My goal is to recreate the moment in excavation when the object being exposed is recognized, when it is freed from the material encasing it. It is at this point that the tension between object and material is strongest.”
