Drawing and Painting 1977-1997
Barbara Grinell
April 12 - May 3, 1997
Grinell has worked in oil, pastel, charcoal, and, most recently, egg-oil tempura. One of the features that distinguishes this work is the attention paid to the mark-the brushstroke-as though it were an airy cuneiform depositing parts of itself on the paper before moving on. This feel for the mark expands into the field of the painting-into color, into shape, and, ultimately, into a sense of space-caressing the body, exciting the eye, opening the heart.
