Appetites
Sylvia Netzer
December 7, 2004 – January 8, 2005
Appetites, Sylvia Netzer’s show of ceramic sculptures, presents an evolution of the artist’s 2001 exhibition of female nudes, Fat Show. In the new work, she further explores the interplay of bulk, weight and sexuality. The largest piece, Glen-Gary Oly, is based on Manet’s Olympia, but Netzer’s reclining nude is carved out of bricks “glazed” in pink encaustic and weighs in at well over 1500 pounds. This hulking nude brings to mind pre-Columbian architecture and the Sphinx as well as figures by Leger and Picasso.
