Avocado Seed Exchange
Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25 from 12–6pm
A.I.R. Gallery 155 Plymouth Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201
During the final weekend of her exhibition never settling into the stability of objects, Zoila Andrea Coc-Chang is inviting visitors to come to A.I.R. Gallery to receive a germinating avocado seed. The seeds will be available on Saturday, June 24, and Sunday, June 25, from 12 to 6 pm.
Extending the themes of care, circulation, collecting, and exchange that are at the core of her practice, Zoila has accumulated avocado seeds and prepared them to begin the process of germination. With her initial care, these seeds have started to shoot out their first roots. She is now handing these seeds over to gallery visitors, who are welcome to take one of the germinating seeds home to continue caring for it.
The seeds are at various rooting stages. Each seed is wrapped around a wet paper towel and placed in a Ziploc bag. Receivers of a rooting avocado seed will have to store it in a dark area (i.e. a closet or pantry) for it to continue growing. Once the seed has sufficient roots, the receiver can carefully take it out of the bag and place it in water.
All seeds come from the artist’s own consumption, family and friends, and food waste of local restaurants she frequents (like Tacos Los Gordos in New Haven, CT). Visitors are encouraged to donate an avocado seed from their own consumption in exchange for one of the germinating seeds.
