LU YIM
Artist Statement
I make performances with movement, sound, and text. These works are somatic, intimate, and oriented toward healing actions. I am in dialogue with hyper-sensorial and dissociative dysphorias, and work in service to them. I attentively give form for these interiors to live and communicate autonomously from the visible performing body. I do this through writing and movement scores, with physical actions ranging from a conversational pace to quietly intense and imperceptible. This is my way of contextualizing sensation, distortion, and pain as liberatory and communicable forces.
Through a queered lens, performance becomes a place for collectively informed questions to become social actions. “Can I resist becoming hard as my external environment becomes more extreme?” I ask, concerned with the ways love and violence intertwine with nationalism and xenophobia. Through form building, I enact the poetics of pain becoming a source of communion, seeking actions of alchemy for healing to occur.
I bring social structures such as the love letter, casual conversation, and ritual into my performances, to create an invitation from which participants can gather as witnesses, participants, and accomplices.
