JANE SWAVELY
Artist Statement
The paintings are reductive but not minimalist. Firmly set in the painting tradition, they embrace their objectness by leaving traces of their support and the history of their making. The act is performative; the medium is the message. They offer a placeholder for my subconscious and embody the many years of practice that lead to accumulations of choices made, conscious or not. Among other things, while they are being made, the painting is the subject. After that, TBD.
