ISABELLA CRUZ-CHONG
Artist Statement
I grew up crossing the international border between Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego, California. This upbringing created an in-between state of mind and emotion that I embody and inhabit. My work comes from this space and is an attempt to touch and soften physical and inner boundaries. Originating from personal reflection, a bicultural upbringing and spirituality; I create installations, videos and performances with raw materials and sound. The raw materials—such as dirt, water or sand—remind me of my vitality and organic capacity to transform, as well as speak to the malleability of psychological and physical divisions within and around me.
