CARRIE SCANGA

Artist Statement

Starting with paper, I create images, books, and installations that evoke paradoxical feelings of fragility and security, isolation and exposure, loneliness and belonging. While I am trained as a printmaker, I embrace temporary site-specific installations as a form of community spectacle. Each project brings an ephemeral experience into a community, inviting people to come together to share a fleeting moment. Through immersive and participatory events that spark wonder, I aim to make palpable emotions that I feel strongly but have never been able to put into words. My installations express my deeply personal inner life, but by capturing and distilling those indescribable, evanescent moments, my goal is to draw out what is universal about those feelings, helping both myself and others feel less alone.

Recently, my installation practice has expanded to include sound and animation. Both spring from a returned focus on narrative and illustration. This circuitous return has also ignited an interest in pursuing artist books as a format that welcomes collaboration in a new way, distinct from the variety involved in site-specific installations.
