The original Womanhouse Project in Los Angeles in 1972 was one of the most important and famous art projects in feminist art history. The artists included in A “Womanhouse” or a Roaming House? “A Room of One’s Own” Today address questions similar to those posited by the original exhibition, but through a contemporary lens: What is the space necessary for an artist to make art in and for whom? Rather than a “Womanhouse” ought we now to envision a Rooming House or a Roaming House? What are the implications of the gendering of space, who owns domestic space, and is creativity more a private pursuit or a public one?
