Stephanie Bernheim’s paintings, which have always been engaged in the interaction of layers, material, and surface, have of recent years also used imagery of implicit social import. Often using the triangle as image, the artist has challenged the viewer to see beyond the literal abstract form. She has moved it from its ambiguous state—somewhere between refuge and vehicle—to perhaps a more ominous image of seductive power and impending danger.
