Sylvia Netzer

GALLERY I

November 3 - 28, 2010

Opening Reception: Thursday, November 4, 6-8 pm

Throughout her career, Netzer has been working with plastic and non-plastic clays at both ends of the ceramic spectrum, from carving brick to using casting slip with molds. Wall Necklaces consists of sculptural elements formed from ceramic units that are contrasted with a variety of other materials, such as steel cable, nylon rope, glass, encaustic, and silk pins. Each of the Wall Necklaces has indents that allude to generative lines or microscopic pathways of communication. With these microscopic pathways, Netzer incorporates what she refers to as a “parallel form of biology”. A graduate of the Bronx High School of the Sciences, Netzer has had a life-long interest in exploring the transformative nature and interconnected relationship of science and art. As Netzer resolves complicated technical issues presented by the challenges of working with clay and ceramics, she also addresses issues of human communication and plays of power.
