Opening Reception: Friday, October 15, 12-6 PM (by appointment)

A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to announce, Under Story, an exhibition of new works by Barbara Roux.

Under Story is an installation of color photographs, sculpture, and an accompanying narrative text based on Roux’s longtime engagement with wild habitat niches in the suburbs of New York City. An environmental artist and activist, Roux is a witness to change, struggle, and resilience in the natural landscapes on a daily basis.

Under Story focuses on a small area of woods that has survived despite frequent human disruption. Roux’s color photographs picture small moments in this uninviting environment and often documents personal rituals she performs at the site. A wall-based assemblage of branch and twig elements, made of clay and wood, creates mysterious forms and shadows that emerge from the gallery walls. Roux’s poetic narrative text grafts the natural, archeological, and mythic histories of this neglected site together.

A spiral bound artist’s book, Under Story, accompanies this exhibition.

Barbara Roux is a New York based artist. She received her MFA in Combined Media Art from Hunter College. Her work has been exhibited at Front Room Gallery, Hofstra University Museum of Art, Wave Hill, Heckscher Museum, Lyman Allyn Art Museum, Islip Art Museum, Discovery Museum, Queens College Art Center, Staller Center for the Arts, Real Art Ways, Alternative Museum, A.I.R. Gallery, Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, and the Everhart Museum of Natural History, Science and Art.
