Carla Tardi studied painting at The Kansas City Art Institute and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she received her M.F.A. Surrealism, early 20th Century American painting and Abstract Expressionism were important to her early development, but it was exposure to the sensibility of the Chicago Imagists that developed her taste for the idiosyncratic and led her to her highly evolved personal iconography.
