COZETTE RUSSELL

Artist Statement

I make work about the body through an intersectional lens of feminism and disability. Using photography, video, installation, and text, I engage a narrative of code and language building with an interest in communication through gesture, touch, and texture. I use a tactual intuition in the studio through process-driven experimentation with utilitarian materials, and I employ a sensory desire to use the body as material and expression––sometimes in acts of repetition with a gaze toward early feminist performance and video art or through doubling, sequencing, and looping. I often translate writings, such as poems and fragmented narratives, into braille, which I hand punch into my photographs, and I explore ways photographic space can expand into sculptural objects. My experience with disability, both my son’s and my own, deeply informs my practice, which is rooted in the ebb and flow of motherhood, care aesthetics, the intimacy of dependency, and a desire for inclusivity.
